The Best Pour Over Coffee Makers
I'm just going to say it. There's one clear winner.
Hario V60 Drip Coffee Decanter
WINNER: This Hario V60 Drip Coffee Decanter is my favorite pour over coffee maker, and it is the one we regularly use at home. Why?
- It reliably produces a very good and clean cup of coffee.
- It has a very small footprint, so it's easy to store. And more importantly, it's very versatile.
- You can take the silicone band off. As such, it's easy to wash and dry all the pieces separately.
- If you have a deep mug, and you want a small cup of coffee, you can actually set that filter basket directly into your mug to make a single cup. This is my personal hack, so you won't see this mentioned on any Hario website. Just make sure the coffee level remains low enough that the cone sits on top.
It's a very simple piece of equipment. However I like it a lot and reach for it every morning. It's also easy to find paper filters that will work with it.
You don't have to use Hario paper filters. But they are generally pretty easy to find. Moreover, you can even subscribe to them on Amazon.
Chemex Pour Over Coffee Maker
The Chemex is an all-around favorite in the coffee community.
The brewer is made entirely of glass. As such, it will not absorb any odors or chemical residues.
The Chemex Glass Coffee Maker also has no moving parts, or pieces (except the wooden handle). So unless it is dropped or in some other way demolished, it will last forever.
I don't quite know if this is a pro or con, but with the Chemex you really ought to use Chemex brand filter paper. On the one hand, Chemex makes one of the thickest filter papers on the market. It gives your coffee a very clean brew. On the other hand, they are pricier than most. Conveniently though, you can get them on Amazon.
Hario Pour Over V60 Dripper
Hario is one of the classic brands for pour over coffee makers. Hario has a line of pour over coffee makers know as V60.
The name comes from the 60° angle of its cone. You can find them made in a variety of materials including ceramic, glass, plastic, and metal.
The unique features of a Hario pour over coffee makers are:
- the cone shape,
- the large single hole on the bottom, and
- the ribs in the cones to allow for the expansion of coffee grounds.
The simplicity of having a single hole on the bottom gives you the ability to determine the flavor of your coffee by adjusting the speed of the water flow.
I won't go into details here, but you can read my guide on How to Make Pour Over Coffee. It will give you much more detailed explanations.
This is the most basic Hario Ceramic Coffee Dripper. It's small, it's sturdy, it's simplistic, and it's beautiful.
You can set it on almost any mug (or a coffee carafe) and start making your cup of coffee right away. I like the simple white. However you can also buy it many different colors and materials. For example, clear acrylic, red ceramic, metal copper, and even olive wood.
One other beautiful Hario V60 coffee brewer I want to mention is this V60 Olive Wood Stand Set. If you have a coffee bar, or enough counter space, this is a beautiful piece of coffee equipment. You might even call art!
Bodum Pour Over Coffee Maker
This Bodum Pour Over Coffee Maker is unique in that it includes a permanent, stainless steel mesh filter. In other words, you don't need to use a paper filter with each brew.
Some say this is better because you don't lost any of the aromatic coffee oils and flavors that may be absorbed by a paper filter.
The carafe is made with a durable, heat-resistant borosilicate glass. It's large enough to make 4 cups of coffee, 8 oz each.
You can chose from several different colors. One special version has a cork band. And before I forget to mention, it's also dishwasher safe.
Melitta Pour Over Coffee Maker
I'm including this Melitta Pour Over Coffee Maker. It is a very basic plastic pour-over coffee brewer that is cheap and handy to have.
Use this if you want a no-frills pour over cofffee maker. Also, Melitta filters are easy to buy at most grocery stores.
See that little gap below the cone? Melitta's cone design enables you to see into the cup without lifting the brewer. This is a great feature so you don't have to worry about over overfilling your mug. With it, you can always make sure you leave enough room for milk.
Best Automatic Pour Over Coffee Makers
I'll leave you with one thought that while there is something romantic about making a manual pour over coffee, there are electric pour over coffee makers on the market.
These machines tend to mimic the manual pour over process. They actually do so with much more precision and control.
Here are couple of the best ones on the market. All are SCAA Certified. That means they meet the Specialty Coffee Association of America's rigorous technical requirements for exemplary home brewers.
I hope these pour over coffee maker reviews help you find the best pour over coffee makers for you!
